Sustainability

Sustainability is a core principle guiding the design, construction and operation of all new Costco Wholesale warehouses. The company integrates environmental responsibility into every stage of development and its operation, aiming to improve efficiency, reduce waste and lower operational costs while delivering value to members.
Waste minimisation is a key priority. In the UK, Costco diverts 100% of its operational waste from landfill through recycling and reuse initiatives, including responsible packaging practices. Energy and water efficiency are also embedded in warehouse design, with features such as LED lighting and building and water management systems to monitor and reduce consumption. Renewable or low-carbon energy technologies are incorporated where possible including photovoltaic (PV) panels.
Sustainable construction is supported through the responsible sourcing of durable materials and adherence to best practice standards. All developments are registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme, with contractors required to follow a Construction Management Plan.
Costco also promotes sustainable transport for staff by encouraging walking, cycling and public transport use, supported by appropriate on-site facilities. EV chargers will also be provided for use by staff and members.
Overall, sustainability is embedded throughout Costco’s operations, reflecting a commitment to reducing environmental impact and maintaining operational efficiency.
